Pruning last years flowers off Hydrangea Tree

This is my first experience with Hydrangea Trees. It was planted last Spring and it already had several blooms to my amazement. It was the Phantom tree from Cottage Farms ordered from QVC shopping network. I'm in Z-5 and we had a mild winter. The dried flowers are still on the tree. Is there anything I should know before cutting these off.I don't want to do anything wrong and sacrifice this years blooms. As an aside, this tree is important to me because I planted it as a memorial to a much beloved dog. He was a white Samoyed and his name was "Phantom Wolf" and I thought this would be a perfect way to honor his time with me. I would appreciate any tips To make sure my little white tree survives. ******princesspeony*******
