Wounded Hydrangea Tree

While pruning my Hydrangea tree, I accidentally rubbed off the bark on the trunk towards the bottom of my tree. It's approx 2 feet up the trunk from the ground. The spot that was rubbed off is about the size of a quarter. Please tell me that I didn't just give my tree an automatic death sentence. What should I do?? I spoke with a couple Nursery's around my house & one said it may or may not live, but not much I could do. One said to put some sealer over it. Then I read on the net, not to do anything (or put sealer) & it would probably heal on it's own. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have babied this tree for 3 years now. It had a pretty rough start & it finally looked like this year was going to be the best so far.....until this.
