Dwarf in sun?

I planted 4 pink elfs in a south facing strip last summer. They get sun in the morning, less so in the afternoon as our rowhouse blocks the light. Three did well, as they are gently shaded in the morning by our neighbor's japanese maple tree. The fourth, which gets more direct light because it is not shaded by the maple tree, died a sad death, even though I gave it more water in an effort to offset the sun.

My question: am I crazy to try to replant another pink elf? Another similar dwarf variety? I would really like another dwarf hydrangea, as it would look silly with something else, as the hole is between 3 hydrangeas and an acuba, which is growing slowly but surely.

TIA
