How resilient are oakleaf hydrangeas?

Last summer I planted an oakleaf hydrangea and over the winter, my lovely four legged friends used the hydrangea as part of their obstacle course.

With the winter and the wind and the playing, he has now been reduced to just a little stub. Since then I've put some little fencing around him to protect him from the four legged friends.

Do you think he is dead? (Below is a picture of him)
