The bigleaf hydrangeas, Hydrangea macrophylla, thrive in shady conditions. The north side of most structures tends to be bright but indirect light, so not quite the same as as very shady. The fact that it does get some direct morning sun is all the better.

You will need to provide some winter protection - you run the risk of cold damage to top growth (not to mention flower buds) in your zone.

I have had good luck with Annabelle hydrangeas in the shade. They bloom every year for me.
