planting near trees

So I bought two new hydrangeas and was hoping to plant near my new fence but noticed when digging several tree roots. The only thing growing in this area is lemon balm, no weeds nothing. Is this a sign that nothing can grow here? I don't want to kill my new hydrangeas.

It always conceerns me when I did a hole and find roots. Shallow roots that grow near the top can be a problem and they will steal water and nutrients. If you have a tree nearby, ask a plant nursery if they can tell you how the root system will develop near the surface.

But I am puzzled by your comment of not having any trees in the area. Some trees will definitely have humongously long root systems, much farther than the tree canopy so could this be the case? Or maybe there used to be a tree around that location and the root still has not "disintegrated"? Did you by accident 'cut' it and see if it was dried out inside or is the root still "growing". Anything going on in your neighbor's side?

Its on my neighbor's side. I guess they have crossed into my yard.
