fertilizing climbers

HI. I finally got a climber to make it through the winter but it is still way too young to climb or bloom. I am thinking maybe that the kind of fertilizer you put on evergreens would be good because I just want to feed it to grow as much as possible this summer and not try to bloom yet. Would that be too hot for a plant that doesn't need acid the way conifers do?

It seems that if I give it regular hydrangea food, it would be wrong since that is formulated for blooms. Am I over thinking this?
