First hydrangea

I recently bought what I thought was a hydrangea bush, but after some research realized that what I bought was a cutting (just a stick with roots). I didn't plant it right away because it was still to cold out and I didn't have the bed ready. After about 2 weeks I realized I needed to get it in the ground, so I put it in a bad spot that was getting a ton of water (but drained really well). I didn't see anything happening and decided to put it in a pot. It is now in the pot and seems to still be alive as when I try and bend the stick it's bendable and doesn't snap. So my questions are.. When should I see something growing on it, anything green or otherwise, also does it take a year or two before it flowers? If I should decide to put it in the ground (not now but later) will it be safe like a foot from the house? Please help, I want it to make it so bad!!
