You can always prune off the damaged leaves; the plant will slowly regenarete new ones (or it might send a new stem from the base/crown). This type of problem does not injure the roots so the plant should be ok.

Thanks to both of you. I realize I'm pushing the zone, but it was a gift so I'll do the best I can. Thanks for your advice. I won't expect much of it this year and hope for the best next year.
