I made a boo boo with my limelight spacing

I planted my limelights 2 years ago at a whopping 9 ft apart stem to stem! Don't know what I was thinking! The current advice says 4ft is best (they grow 8 ft wide and high from the center) if you want a connected hedge. I am destined to have a gap of 1-2 feet between my limelights at maturity.

Should I plant another limelight in between or go with a smaller hydrangea like little lime? Or maybe a vanilla strawberry but I think they get pretty big too. I don't want to dig them up and I'm not sure planting another limelight at the 3ft mark would be healthy in the long run.

Oh pick me!! I would opt for adding a smaller hydrangea in between and a little forward. The effect could be lovely, and you get to buy more plants. It's a win-win! =D

Mine are too closely planted also. I hate to prune them
hard....so...this fall, I'll be moving a few so that they
can be free. Does anyone trim theirs up at the bottom, or,
let them grow free form?

Sorry it took so long to respond I have been insanely busy. Well I'm having a quiet moment in the backyard looking at my limelights which are exploding! I'm still straddling the fence with what to do. I want them to eventually block my view of the neighbors so the gap thing is really bothering me. I just might plant another limelight in the middle and prune hard for larger flowers. I experimented with some sub zero roses from QVC which are growing nicely but I just don't like it.

Pearlgirl, I do let mine grow freely but I think they would look better with some shaping.

Me hearty, I like that idea and I'm trying to picture a little lime in the middle but like I said, I don't want to see my neighbors yard. Lol
