florist's hydrangea question

I found a "Shooting Star" hydrangea -in a supermarket of all places. I had been searching for this variety as a garden plant and it was impossible, so I'm thrilled. My question concerns the roots. Since it was grown to flower heavily in a small pot, its roots are very dense and fine (hair-like)and packed very tight. I can't even find any good-size roots circling the bottom that I can stretch out. I did my best to pull apart a couple of sections where I could, but was afraid to aggressively comb it out because most of the roots would just have to be torn off. So I stuck it in potting soil in a pot on my porch, but I don't know if it can grow properly with that mass of roots.

What do you suggest?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
