dead hydrangea?

For 23 years I've admired, watered, and pretty much ignored a generic mophead blue hydrangea. And this is what I get for all my trouble: a dead plant.

(I've since planted many different varieties, and had good luck with them. I especially love the Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nigra'.)

Last year the plant did very well. This year there are a couple of shoots coming up away from the front of the main plant (in the photo) and they have leaves, the main plant looks dead as a door nail.

A friend said cut it to the ground and see what happens. I did and I will.

We do have moles in the yard, according to the dachshund.
