ES Original 'Tree Trunk' syndrome

October_Gardens

Has anyone else out their noticed their Endless Summer Original hyrangea shrubs have developed 1-2 main "tree trunks" at the base? When this happens, the shrub seems to fail to produce any further shoots from the crown; only from where the trunk starts to branch into smaller branches (usually 3-6 inches up from the ground). Since there is no new growth from the base, this severely limits the overall size of the plant, which of course makes it great for some applications (pots or small border specimens) but a bust for those who want the whole 4x4 border shrub. In other words, shrubs with tree trunk syndrome have funnel all the energy up a narrow path, yielding only about 2ft of new growth from a central point that, which then dies back and repeats itself each year.

This may be a main contributing factor for those out there who have complained about their ES's performance over the years.

Has anyone out there noticed this with their ES's? You definitely notice this happening to a large number of specimens in their retail pots, even to some of the 3-gals! I would tend to avoid these now and stick with ones that had a significant number of traditionally sized canes including ones from current year's growth.

To these ends, is there a good way one could train their shrub to get away from the tree trunk syndrome and start producing new shoots at the crown?
