Hydrangea Seedlings

Carrie B

While working as a gardener, my boss instructed me to weed out the dozen or so hydrangea seedlings in a large bed. The garden has quite a few varieties of hydrangea, mostly Macrophyllas.

Some of the seedlings have the distinctly red stems of the "Lady in Red" that are one of the hydrangeas there, others have green stems. I'm assuming that the seedlings will have all come from the lacecaps that are in the bed, and not from any of mopheads, since mopheads are sterile (right?) I don't remember ever seeing hydrangeas seed in like this. Maybe the combination of a really mild winter and a consistently moist garden bed helped that happen.

I took home 6 or 8 of the seedlings and potted them up. They'll probably end up as gifts, or in other client's gardens once they've grown out a bit. Do hydrangea seedlings come true? Any experience with seeded in hydrangeas?
