HELP - tiny brown spots on stems

I have a Merritt's Supreme hydrangea with tiny little brownishish-black spots on the stems. At first I thought they were some type of insect they're so little. But then I realized they were spots. This is the same plant that that the leaves were turning brown and drying up. Are these two things related? can anybody help me?

RE: HELP - tiny brown spots on stems

Tiny dark spotting on green (new growth) stems and branches is entirely natural for most macrophyllas (and a great many other plant types) and are not related to any leaf spots. They are called lenticels and are like pores, allowing gas exchange. Leaves turning brown and drying up usually indicate watering issues (too little/too much) or cold damage.
