Relocating a young Tardiva

Your thoughts please!

I found 2 babes growing under an established 6y/o Tardiva ~ I harvested & potted in 2010 & set in place in 2011. One is reaching for more sun ~ center stems are growing taller & a couple, longer on 1 side. I wish to move her to sunnier site nearby to grow a bit more simetrical.

What sort of root system am I looking forward to dealing with. I have a 10y/o Tardiva & other Paniculatas that seem to develop roots that like to crawl on top of soil ~ should I worry if I find this li'l T, has a few of those now?

My friend at the nursery said to dig up to drip line, but didn't say about depth ~ again appreciate your thoughts!!!

I'm sorry I couldn't wait ~ the opportunity presented itself ~ I dared & mission accomplished!

There were indeed many small network of smaller roots all around & a few thicker deeper ones. I ended up digging 2ft wide & 18" deep w/ the help of hand cultivator to loosen the soil from smaller mesh of roots & lessen unavoidable root damages. There indeed were a few surface roots but I've read that they are not to worry too much over!

I did have to enlarge the hole I've prepared, by 6" around to accommodate all the root-network.

All I have to do now is wait w/ fingers crossed that she survives the trauma of snapped roots & relocation!
