Which variety(ies) of hydrangea did you get?

If some stems will be on the ground: once planted, just put up a 1' high section of rubber coated wire fence (green or black) around the plant to hold them up at a desired angle (up to 45 degrees). Then if you wish, trim the stems down (after flowers are spent) to the next healthy set of buds (at the nodes where the leafs attach to the stems). The green stems should get thicker and gradually position themselves toward sunlight. New stems the following year should grow straight up and not become floppy until the blooms occur again. Aside from all that, you can just leave the fence there indefinitely; it will help hold future blooms off the ground so they don't get "stuck in the mud".

And I agree, it is a healthy plant otherwise. I'll try trimming it in the fall and see how it comes out next year.

Masja is a good one, can go purple if you want it to.

BTW I forgot to mention that floppy stems seem to occur on purchased plants when too many hydrangeas are crowded next to each other in a greenhouse, which results in the above when the plant is finally separated from its brethren. Some growers put small fences right in the pots to prevent this when they ship them out for retail, but this is hit or miss.

Greenhouse overcrowding is probaby what happened here. Two of the other hydrangea plants I bought are a lovely purple so unless the soil has other plans I think I'll keep the 'pop of pink' for now. :)

I just finished planting it and propped up the low lying stems with a few extra garden bricks. It looks fine and should grow big and healthy!
