vanilla strawberry hydrangea questions

I planted two vanilla strawberry hydrangeas last fall. They were very slow to leaf out, but have finally done so. They do look a bit strange with leaves at the top of the stalks and a few short new branches at the bottom. I have noticed several instances of deformed leaves--they look crinkled on the edges. They also have a problem with little spiders that make webs and curl up in the edges of the leaves. Today I notice quite a few leaves that are brown and dead looking down the middle vein. Other than that they seem quite happy! I even noticed today that they are beginning to have a few buds popping out. There are so few leaves on the plants that I hate to have anything destroying them. Any ideas?
