Some VS on the way

I've got 3 small VS on the way from White Flower Farm (finally!) and will be preparing their locations for planting this weekend. One area gets a lot of sun, and is a little overrun with grass right now, so I am thinking of some nice "ground cover" to plant outside the mulch line for the VS. I want to go with potato vine (the chartreuse one), but I'm not sure if the roots would compete too much with the VS. One note: the same bedded area is also currently home to a fig tree that's about 2" diameter in the trunk and perhaps 9' tall at the top of its uppermost leaves. No idea what the roots are like, but it's about 4' away from where I'll put in the VS.

Suggestions for cover? I have St. Augustine grass now (HATE IT... hate those invasive runners) so it is what I'm having to pull up and out of the bed, even with concrete edgers, shredded cedar mulch and fabric laid down, but I plan to replace it with zoysia, so hopefully there will be less overall competition for root real estate.

Thanks :)
