When can I transplant?

After much deliberation I've decided to move my beloved snow mountain hydrangea tree. It just isn't in the right spot and is growing lopsided because it is so close to my porch. I'm going to put either an Annabelle or Incrediball hydrangea in it's place. I assume that Fall is the best time to transplant, but is that the best time to purchase/plant a new hydrangea shrub? Or, would you transplant the tree in the fall and wait till next Spring to plant the shrub?

I changed my mind and went with Sister Theresa---I think the shape of her is a bit more formal (and that will fit in better with what I'd like to do.) I bought a beautiful large one and will keep it in the container (well watered of course) until Fall when I am able to transplant the tree and replace it with ST. In the meantime, she looks lovely on my front porch! Problem solved :)
