Preparing the hydrangea site

Hi, I'm new to this forum--it already looks helpful. I'm a fan of hydrangeas because of my ties to Alabama. I now live in Eagle ID (near Boise). Hydrangeas take more work here. The heat and sun are very intense during the summer. Thankfully the 90 deg + temps don't last too long.

My wife wants me to put a hydrangea right next to a patio. Two sites of the planting area will be the concrete patio. I already have a soil ph of 7.8. When I dig the spot, I'm thinking about putting a piece of plastic bag or perhaps part of a large plastic pot in the hole on the 2 sides next to the concrete to reach the leaching from the concrete. Has anyone does this? Does it sound like overkill?

Thanks.
