what is wrong with my hydrangea tree?

Looked good until about two weeks ago. It is starting to flower right now but I noticed yellow leaves dropping from the centre. I looked and thought I saw webbing so I sprayed with insecticial soap but now the leaves are brown and dropping at a faster rate. About 50% of the leaves have dropped. What is the problem?

Hydrangeas are notoriously intolerant of drought. If your summer has been like mine, your hydrangea may just have exhausted its water supply.

I agree with previous poster. Once my hydrangea tree starts flowering, its water needs further increase. Mine is 3 years old and did what you described for the first 2 years in times of drought.
