Looks like the leaves are scorched ....being newly planted, the plant is not fully established, thus leaves get scorched if the root ball dries (also given the fact it is planted next to your fence, which is hotter).....Once the shrub becomes established next season, the leaves will not scorch as bad....

Thanks for the help. I'm relieved to know it isn't diseased. I didn't know the fence makes it hotter. Is there anything I can do to help it out? We're just now getting into the hottest part of our summer here in Dallas.

Try giving it adequate moisture (1 gallon per watering) and 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line as browning of the leaves from the edges inwards suggest not enough moisture. It may be even ok to give it more sun protection in another location or use of 35% shade cloth. I generally look for places where they get shade before 11am or 12pm because otherwise the leaves get scorched during the summer. I learned that the hard way when a crape myrtle that shaded a hydrangea had a limb torn off during a thunderstorm and 2 weeks later the leaves in direct contact with the sun were all yellow while the rest (the shaded leaves) remained green.

The spot it's in should be fine in a year or two when our cross vine on the trellis behind it really gets going. It will be shaded by about 12 or 1:00 at that point. For now how long should I run my drip hose (which is under my mulch) in order to ensure it gets a full gallon?

If you mean a soaker hose, you may want to read the label for guidance doing the calculation. I bought one and it lasted overnight only so my experience with those is zero. There were wild wabbits in the neighborhood at the time so maybe they were the culprits. Never found out for sure.

I have a drip irrigation system now and, for the water pressure that it uses, 1 hour = 1 gallon.

What you can do now: Rig temporary shade when needed to avoid excess sun & heat.

Stakes + sheets + clothespins make a dandy temporary shade cloth.

What I see is some burned older leaves (pinch them off). The newer leaves look green and healthy. Perhaps it dried out during the time the older leaves burned?
