Why are my hydrangeas ugly?

Debbie Downer

When I first moved here years ago, the old fashioned ball shaped hydrangeas (not the annabelle type that's cut down every year but some other variety) had nice big white balls that turned a beautiful buff color as they aged. Now, for the last who knows how many years, they just turn this sickly color of green and then brown. The balls don't seem so big either.

I got a pinky winky this year all excited about it turning pink, but its doing the same thing - the sickly green and brown.

What am I doing wrong? Its not like I water them constantly but its not drought conditions either - have been getting some rain and the soil hasn't been really bone dry ever, that I can tell. Theres some planted in sun, and some in mostly shade, and they all do the same thuing.

THANKS!
