Useful info or useless? Hydrangea pruning technique

I read this post on the perennials forum and linked to the site. I read about pruning bigleaf hydrangeas. He says to prune them before mid July, which is fine, BUT he also says to prune the nonflowering stems down to 6 inches! Is this right? Or crazy for one that blooms on old and new wood? Maybe he meant cut each stem back by 6 inches?
