New Hydrangea - lg blooms cause stalks to droop

Hi, I'm new to hydrangeas and planted my first one this spring. It is an Endless Summer original. There are several blooms now, getting larger by the day (many several inches across) and turning a lovely pink.

However, they seem to drag down the spindly little stalks they are on, so that the stems (& thus leaves) are touching the ground in some cases. The flowers aren't drooping; it just seems that the flowers are too heavy for some of the stems.

I'd really love to have the thing build a bit more leafy bulk; is it harmful to remove the flowers at this early stage of its life? I don't mind foregoing blooms the first year if it will help the stems to build some strength and the plant to bush out.

Or, should I just leave it alone and be patient?

Thanks!

Freyja
