Do not fertilize them while they are stressed and grow cuttings as a backup if he has some sentimental attachments to them. Use burlap bags to transport them long distances so the root ball does not fall apart. Keep them well watered and check the soil daily. Place the containers in a place where they get indirect sun and very little wind. I too had to temporarily move some hydrangea so the roofers could do their work. I covered the root ball with burlap, place them in a wheel barrow and stored them in a place where they got no direct sun & where they had three sides covered and protected from the wind. Feel free to cut the blooms and even some of the leaves. When you cut the roots, the remaining roots cannot supply water to the leaves as well as they once did so cutting some leaves -say a 1/4- can help. Which leads to the last suggestion: try to move as big a rootball and as many roots as you can.

hydrangeas can live in pots quite well if you can find ones big enough for the root balls. don't forget to water water water, don't let them dry out or get stressed from heat and dryness. They should be fine.
