Need help with potted hydrangea's

Hello,

I was recently in the hospital for kidney cancer surgery and received 2 potted hydrangea's as gifts. Let me preface everything else by saying I do NOT have a green thumb, so any advice is appreciated.

These plants sat in my hospital room, which was very very cold, for about 3 days. When I got home they were placed on our covered porch for a couple of days and I noticed the flowers and leaves starting to wilt, curl up and the edges of both were turning brown. I thought maybe they needed sun, so I put them in the sun for a couple days. Now they are back on the covered porch. Have I killed them? I do know they grow off the old wood the next year, or something to that affect. Can I do anything to save these? When can I plant them in the ground? Thanks for any help.

Lisa
