Couldn't be a hydrangea. Notice how the leaf sets come out in multiples (in a bunch) from one bud? All hydrangeas I know of don't do this. More likely to be in the viburnum or lilac families, I suppose.

When were these pictures taken? If recently then I'd say it is a hydrangea paniculata.

They were taken a few days ago. I've looked up viburnums and spireas but haven't found one that blooms this late. My mom insists it's a hydrangea but her memory's not that great.

Looks like a Hydrangea PG that hasn't had enough light.

yes a PG type that is too shaded so seems spindly.
