You can see some chewed up leaves and holes in some on this one.

New growth maybe a good sign.

Did you water it during summer hot days ? Dried leaves indicate not enough water. Lesser leaves also mean it is not getting enough SUN.

If the leaves got progressively dry and crunchy from the bottom up it might be cercospora, a fungal infection. Insect damage is unrelated and normal. There's nothing else you can do this year but next you can start treating the foliage with a fungicide/pesticide combo spray. This happened to the Incrediball I bought in spring. It has 20 canes but only about 10 leaves left on it. :(

During summer months you'll notice these things happening to plants during increased and prolonged periods of moist air and overcast days. And during dry sunny periods, the progress of the infection slows. The best way to prevent further damage after the crisping starts is to remove the brown foliage completely and treat the leaves with the spray that are still 100% green.

macmalli, there was a period I think I let it dry out too much and I think that's what started it.

Springwood_Gardens, I think the overcast, hot days we had here for a few weeks didn't help the situation. I'll try to love on it and see if next year it'll come back healthy and stronger.
