Old Hydrangea, to cut back or yank out?

Hi all... friends of mine bought a house and it's got an untended landscape (other than the standard mow and blow) so I'm helping them a bit... but I've no experience with hydrangeas... they've got about 2 or 3 bushes along the N side of the house, smack up against the wall and the walkway and they've obviously met the nasty blade of the "oh so skilled" gardener.. so they are a mess, very open, not a lot of leaves, no blooms. And I'm sure they are probably pretty old. BUT being that my friends are on a budget, does it make sense to cut them way back, dig em up and move them or just start over with a new one? I hate throwing plants away....

Thanks for the input... Oh yeah, we are in Los Angeles.
