If you plant them on the eastern or northeastern side of your house or garden, that should be ideal. Morning sun and afternoon shade is the most desirable situation for macrophyllas, serratas and arborescens (Annabelle tyes). These all should have some sort of protection from the hottest part of the afternoon sun. IME, oak leaf hydrangeas and paniculatas can tolerate a lot more sun, with the paniculatas leading the way even up to full sun positions.

Daily wilting is also not necessarily a sign of too much sun.......it can be common for any type of hydrangea in excessive heat and more so with newly planted ones compared to well-established plants.

thank you so much. i planted my antique roses on the northeastern side of the house due to lack of a better place to put them. the hydrangeas were replanted last year, so they are newly extablished. perhaps when the trees to the north of the hydrangeas get more leaves they will shade them in the afternoon, but it looks like there won't be a better place for them in my yard unless i move the roses, which i am not willing to do. oh, well. i love both and have no better place to plant the roses either. we should have paid more attention to the yard when we were buying homes.
