Snow is actually good because it protects the shrub from very cold temperatures "in the tundra" thru the winter months. Think of it as another form of winter protection technique!

Ok so I should at least protect it from early season HARD freezes before it snows??

If the plant is hardy to your zone (for example, if it is a paniculata or arborescens), it would need no winter protection other than mulch.

If it is a macrophylla & you are trying to protect early flower buds and the stems, you can winter protect it with a chicken wire cage around the bush (4" away from the sides or more; same for the top) and fill the inside pack full of leaves or hay or other similar material. Many folks prepare the cage and then they wait until the plant has gone dormant or if the temps are advertised to take a sudden big downward spiral.

If it is a reblooming macrophylla hardy to your zone, you could also do nothing except mulch (3-4" up to the drip line). The stems will not survive winter (unless you have a mild winter) and you can prune the dead wood by May.
