Extreme Summer heat

Last Spring we planted two 3 foot tall Hydrangeas with beautiful white blooms. During the intense 110+ summer heat in Dallas the beautiful leaves turned brown. We removed the brown leaves. Now the plants look like stick plants with a lot of new growth at the base of the plant.

We are still having 95+ degree days and no rain in sight. I am watering them early morning and late evening.

Should we go ahead and cut them back, wait a while, or do we have a lost cause?
