Best hydrangea for me?

Hello,

My wife and I have always loved front porches bordered by hydrangeas. Our new home has a large front porch and we'd like to landscape the front with hydrangeas in the spring. We're looking for advice on which hydrangea species is best suited for our location.

We really think that the white blooms of Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle or Hydrangea arborescens Incrediball would look best in front of our house, but photos and descriptions of these plants have us worried they are too small and low to the ground. Our front porch is pretty high off the ground, so a taller plant would look best.

That brings us to the "Endless Summer" hydrangea we have read so much about. Although we would prefer white blooms, these blue/pink endless summer plants seem to be a better size and better suited for the front of our house.

We live in CT, Zone 5A, and the front of our house is North facing (full sun only in early morning and evening). Can anyone recommend a good hydrangea for us? We have also read about the Lime Light hydrangea which seems like it might be a good option for us (although not true white, it's taller than the aborescens.

You may want to check these: on the Forever & Ever Series, look for Whiteout (a Zone 4 macrophylla with white blooms) or Double Delights Peace Hydrangea (double sepals; I am not too familiar with this one so ck its winter hardiness). The Endless Series also has a Zone 4 white-ish macrophylla called Blushing Bride that has a little blue or pink tint on the blooms.

Blushing Bride (rebloomer) or sweet summer would be the best choices, the height is set at 10 years they will get a little larger. posted some videos of a few of these plants a little while ago under "mystical flame hydrangea".
Most hydrangea are not bud hardy in zone 5 so a rebloomer would be best paniculata for late season flowers.

Erik, I would recommend you reconsider the Limelight. It can grow as large as 8 feet. And although it does start out with a greenish tinge - fades to pinkish and then finally a shade of maroon, it is a lovely crisp white for most of it's summer bloom time. I highly recommend it. My second recommendation would be one of the annabelle's. I love them too! Good Luck, Jm
