New wood/Old wood??

This is such great site. I'm a new gardener and just planted a Hydrangea Little Lime in a large container. Need to know what is meant by "new wood & old wood"? Also it is November and my new plant's leaves are fading from green to yellow. Does this mean my new plant is going dormant? Right now our days are between 50-60 degrees and nights 35-40.

Yes, it's going dormant.

New wood is the stuff that grew this year.
Old wood grew prior to this year, so may be 1 year old, 2 years old, etc.

Since you are not used to seeing the hydrangea leaf changes, you may want to make a note on a 2012 wall calendar (or create an electronic reminder) in October 2012 to expect hydrangea leaves to start turning yellow sometime in November.
