Winter Protect

What could be used as a substitute to leaves to winter protect? I accidentally disposed of my yard leaves before thinking I was going to need a bag or two. Straw?

Yes, you can also use straw, Ibanez540r. Just remember to save unused straw in order to fill areas that might settle during winter.

I ended up using four stakes around the hydrangea and wrapped burlap then stuffed it full of straw. Hopefully works well. ...juts worried about how much of a pain it's going to be to clear all the straw in spring.

I have not used straw for winter protection here so I am not sure if it would be a pain either. It might get messy if the straw is wet at the time you want to remove it. If it is not a big deal to have some of the straw spread around by the wind, I would experiment by removing the burlap (only) 1-2 weeks after your average date of last frost. Then a week later, I would remove the straw or spread it as mulch around the nearby plants. If no prior users of straw chime in, post again in the Spring and let us know what was your experience when removing the straw.
