Tepin peppers and hydroponics

missfancyplants

Hello,

I manage the greenhouse at my university and I have been experimenting with hydroponics. We got some tepin peppers which are slow growing, desert peppers that are hotter than habaneros. One of my professors got them from New Mexico and only a few successfully germinated. The peppers seem to be doing fine but since they take so long to grow its hard to tell. Since they are a desert plant it is ironic we are putting them in hydroponics, I am worried its too much, I found some black sludge like stuff on the pots the other day. Is that a sign somethings up? Any advice?
