Pipe cleaners

Has anyone ever heard of pipe cleaners being used as wicks for watering? I bought a potted hydrangea recently, and when I repotted it I found a pipe cleaner sticking through one of the drainage holes at the bottom of the plastic pot it was sold in.

Yes I have heard pipe cleaners are used as wicks for watering both in regular and hydroponic gardening. Although I am aware they do not work as well in hydroponics due to very heavy salt build up.

Hey Danielfp, in your blog you spoke about having lettuce in a system that sits on top of the water without actually touching it. Can you elaborate on it a bit? I'm currently growing lettuce in DWC but we use pumps for air. If we could get rid of the pumps that'd be great.
