I have seen classroom project lessons before, I'm not sure at what grade level they were intended for. But they were basically a teachers guide and/or lesson plan for growing plants with hydroponic systems. I'm not sure if I will be able to find them again though.

But is there anything specific about growing seeds that you were looking for, wanting to demonstrate/learn from the project? Any particular type of seeds? Are they supposed to grow the seeds to full grown plants, or is it more about ways to germinate seeds and get them ready for transplant. If he wants to grow the seeds to full grown plants, the type of plant makes a difference in type of system.

The two simplest type of hydroponic systems would be either a "wick system" or "water culture system." I like to help people design hydroponic systems, and if you want I can probably help better through e-mail because I cant attach pictures or pdf. files to posts in this forum. And I have a lot of pictures of a easy to build water culture system, as well as other things I created so they don't have a live link I can post to them either. Some seeds will definitely germinate and grow faster than others, especially under different temperature and light conditions. And how many seeds/plants are you thinking about?

I Think a pickle jar water culture cloner/grower would be ideal. You don't need much more than a suitable container and a small aquarium air pump & tubing. Unlike a wick setup the children will be able to see whats going on.

yeah a simple deep water culture system like a jar fill of water with a airstone in it as hardclay7a suggested would be great for a school project, just remember to put something removable on the outside the jar to keep the light off. You should try and get hold of some rhubarb swiss chard seeds, the reddish roots in a large jar of bubbling water would look pretty cool.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be fancy. There's a thread in this section about using a styrofoam sponge as the starting media, you can use a plastic Dixie cup with small slits in the bottom of the sides and a couple of holes in the bottom. Instead of hydroton, use small rocks or pebbles from the yard - just wash them off. Need a light? Get a 23 watt CFL, 5-6.5K one.
