Root structure of green leafies and hydroponics

I am reading about growing various kinds of green leaf veggies in hp but am curious about the root structure. Do they have long, thin root structures or are they shallow and wide? The reason I am asking...I have seen people using square pieces of fiberglass to start seeds...I saw some "chicken wire" today that has a square pattern to the wire. I was wondering, to get a really dense growth, if it would be possible to place the little fiberglass pads in each square of the chicken wire and have it grow there. I am guessing that if the root structure of the plant were deep and narrow it might work to create a super high return (per sq. foot) from this crop. I am sure that it would require multiple floodings per day, and daily replenishment of nutrients...but that would be acceptable for me.
