I'm growing Mango's straight in Hydroponics but do transfer alot of other plants from soil. There's really no problem. You can check out Photobucket/ChristianWarlock to see from sprouting to two years grown hydro.

I always discourage growing perpetual growth plants(i.e. trees, bushes, etc) in hydroponics unless you grow things hydroponically for a living.
Human nature indicates that eventually we get tired of tending to the plants as needed and neglect them. Soil, when this happens, is much more forgiving of our neglect.
