I don`t use an aerospring but in general,
Option 1 would cause problems with waterlogging and maybe stem rot.
Option 2 would work better and takes some of the sting out of an overly powerful spray. Still a chance of waterlogging though.
Option number 3 works for me but it will mean handwatering until the roots are fairly well developed. Its a similar approach to preparing plants for NFT.

I'm torn between 2 & 3 now. Two for ease of operation, no watering from above, and three because it's worked for you.

I should have asked this sooner, I'll be potting them up in a couple of days...

A lot depends on how powerful your mist or spray is.
If its a gentle sprinkle/spray then the bottom of the pots would be fine. Add a timer to allow the roots to dry a little between sprays.
If its a high pressure mist,it will tend to disperse to fill the space so aiming isn`t quite as important as long as the roots arent too close to the nozzles :)

I'm spraying/sprinkling in this system, thought about misters but decided to leave these alone - more chance of blockages.

Option 2 it is then, I'll get this adjusted now.

I took a look at the aerospring website. The roots on the basil could benefit from a drying out period as they look a little waterlogged.

I use netafim coolnets and they don`t clog very often. I use a filter before the pump and another on the return line to the reservoir to catch any root debris etc.
For anyone interested in aeroponics the 1mb video clip on the netafim website is worth watching, it shows the coolnet mist quality with 60-75psi pressure.
