Help with weird growth on hydro tomatoes

Hello all!

I am hoping you can help me identify what is going on with my hydroponic tomato. It was planted in December and has only maybe a half dozen tomatoes on it, but it is not looking very healthy and today I noticed these weird root like projections on the stem. There are hundreds of them in various lengths. I thought they might be insects but they don't seem to be. They seem to be something that the tomato is growing itself.The tomato has been growing in my New England basement all winter. Everything else I am growing is thriving well, except this tomato. I'm thinking it's not going to make it and I should just start over, but I would like to learn from my mistake. Thanks so much!!!

Those are roots. Tomatoes will put out roots from their stems whenever there is enough moisture/humidity.

So does that mean that there is too much humidity in my basement? Do I need to worry?

No, it doesn't necessarily mean there is too much humidity. Tomatoes will do this out in the garden frequently when the plant grows and sort of "slouches". The soil moisture is enough to cause/generate root growth from the stem. Run your fingers up the stems of your tomatoes and you will feel rough bumps. Those are root nodules than can develop into full roots. I don't think you need to worry unless your tomato plant is suffering other problems.
