Basils begining to wilt with brown and soft roots

i just started experimenting with hydroponics a few months ago, and i've been growing Basil plants over organic liquid solutions. For the past few months, they have been doing very well with no problems what so ever.

All of a sudden, after a sudden pour of rain one night, i noticed that the lower half of my basils' leaves had brown spots.some basil plants' lower halves had no more leaves on them at all! I suspect nutrient burn, but the higher half of leaves are fine and green. I observed this for a few days and noticed that when i lift the plant to check the roots, they have turned brown and feel like a human's conditioned hair, and not white and crispy like they used to.

Not only that, but the new transplanted young basils' leaves are so tiny!

Could anyone advise me what to do? is this a result from possible effects of the rain? perhaps the water got contaminated, and i should flush everything out?
