living wall gardens

Hello all,

I've always been interested in creating a miniature garden wall utilizing hydroponics similar to the ones posted in this website.

http://www.sentex.net/~edc/VerticalGardens/images/401_VG_wall_before.jpg

This is going to be an ambitious project for me but I think I'm up for the challenge. I do not have any experience in hydroponics. Can you guide me to how to build this thing? Is there a website I can check to see how this is done.

A more extreme form of the above is this

and I had a chance to speak an architect who built something similar (in a building in Toronto) and he mentioned that his method will not require chemical nutrients to keep the plants healthy.

Needless to say, I'm really hooked up on the idea.

Hi Ianna, I have a couple ideas that might help you get started on a vertical hydro system. You can see a drawing by following the link Going Vertical. The basic plan involves making a frame using 4 inch PVC with wire mesh wrapped and screwed to the PVC. Then you stuff peat moss between the wire mesh. The frame is also set up to water the vertical matt easily. Hope it helps, chuck

Wow, thanks. It's been so long since i posted that I've given up on a response. This is helpful. I'll give it a try.

I bought a garden wall planter, and adapted it for hydro. It has pockets like a round strawberry planter does. I used netting to keep the media, clay ball type in the pockets. I ran drippers, the nutrient runs into lower pockets, as it goes down the wall. This seems simpler that what you are looking for, you can see the planter at www.leevalley.com under gardening index under potting. You can stack them 3 high, but they need a wall or something for support.

wow - those stack and wall planters are COOL! ...but I'd probably really like to be able to create my own out of recycled materials --

figuring out what those materials might be is the challenge.

There's actually a bunch of different systems you can use for living walls. You can drip feed it.. use wick watering.. you can build it with felt or use dirt as the growing medium
