Barer Root in a Pond

Hi--I'm usually on the pond forum but am stymied right now, need some help. I had a hydroponic garden waaay too long ago but wonder if the principles and techniques can apply elsewhere.

I have a pond and am building a small stone island with a couple of openings into the water. I very much would like to have an evergreen shrub, possibly a small (1-2') evergreen tree. I would support the plant but just let the roots grow down into what seems to be nutrient rich water (fish and more). That was my set up back when-hardware cloth tray, vermiculite and nutrients in a bag from the pharmacist. Date me?

My question is, can anyone suggest the shrubs or trees that would survive bare root--or any twist on my plan that might help?

Thanks for taking a look here and some thought, suggestions, or useful links. Even Google seems to have no clue lol
