I don't know the answer to your question but I have heard of tomatos not liking sudden, extreem changes in nutrient strength. They also don't like sudden extreem changes in moisture availability. (like going from hot dry weather to being over wet causing splitting or something like that.) I've heard of people complaining about their toms splitting after heavy rains essentially flushed their hydroponic system. I don't know if that is actually what caused the problem or not though.
