fish swimming in hydroponics system

Is algae ever a problem with hydroponics or can it be ignored? My grandfather has a small pond lined with rocks he does as a hobby with goldfish in them, and I don't think the algae has bothered the plants too much. Not sure if this is true, but I heard plants like being watered with the algae water. I'm new to hydroponics, getting information online and from a book and looking for cheap effective ways to set it up. I've heard of hydroponic setups involving kiddie pools. If fish were put in there as long as they are not the type to eat at the roots, would they bother hydroponics in something like a huge aquarium or kiddie pool?
