We had the same problem. We also made the mistake of purchasing long ones with plastic on the bottom that were supposed to link to additional air stones from our local pet/fish store.
Last weekend at our hydroponics store we purchased "4 inch O2 cylinder stones" made by "elemental solutions" and they are the same price as the ~6 inch air stones. They do not move around and they have air bubbles coming out all over. We are very happy so far and plan to replace all of the stones to these as they break.

if airstones don't break, they will eventually clog. another solution is to create a small airlift to waterfall the water back into the reservoir.

I use H2O2, 35% 2 to 5 ml/ tsp per gallon..NO AIR STONE AT ALL, noisy little buzzer's. Nice white roots for the complete life cycle,even use it to clean everything..love the stuff

H2O2 isnt much use with organics, water movement is a much better alternative. The roots will benefit from the nutes being mixed constantly. Roots sitting in perfectly still water wont have the same access to the elements, it`ll be more or less just the boundary layer closest to the roots.
